Our racing stable ranks consistently among the best in the sport. Our silks and Partners appear in the Winner's Circle at premier racetracks across the country. Horses representing West Point Thoroughbreds annually appear on the biggest stages, opening doors for members of our racing partnerships to experience memorable achievements beyond their initial expectations.
Our horses and Partners have competed in the Kentucky Derby, Breeders' Cup, Travers, Preakness, Belmont, and Hong Kong Mile. Our Thoroughbreds have earned some of the most prestigious graded stakes trophies from coast to coast. We've won races in Canada and Dubai. We continuously set the bar higher and higher in our quest to develop champion horses and deliver winning experiences to our owners.
Horses donning the black and gold make headlines. Our all time leading money earner, Macho Again, dueled with sensational filly Rachel Alexandra down to the wire in the 2009 Whitney Handicap, eliciting roof raising roars from the crowd in a historical race for the ages at the Spa. Read More
Our filly, Lear's Princess, overtook the 2007 Belmont Champion Rags to Riches in a dramatic stretch run and added the Grade I Gazelle to her impressive resume. Lear's Princess was later auctioned for $2.7 million as a broodmare prospect. Multiple Grade I winning filly Dream Rush was an Eclipse Award Finalist for Female Sprinter in 2007 and was sold for $3.3 million dollars at public auction.
Our notable achievements and statistics are the end results of discipline, professional experience, and a breadth and depth of institutional knowledge applied each and every day. Since 2007 when we hit our stride at the national elite levels of the sport, our results on the racetrack have been impressive. Over $11 million in purse earnings and a winning percentage above 20%, prove our racing syndicates are a force to be reckoned with among racing circuits throughout North America.
For the second time in three years, West Point finished as the leading Thoroughbred racing partnership in the country by North American wins (60), stakes wins (11), and purses earned ($3.9 million).
Our talented 3-year-old filly Justwhistledixie elated her Partners with a five race winning streak over the winter and spring including the Davona Dale(G2) and Bonnie Miss(G2) at Gulfstream Park. Simultaneously, New York-bred Mr. Fantasy had his Partners dreaming of the first Saturday in May with a third place finish in the Gotham(G3) and a victory in the Withers(G3) at the Big A. Fitz Just Right became a stakes winner and placed in the Bourbonette Oaks(G3).
Macho Again became a Grade One Winner and added a second Stephen Foster Handicap trophy to our stable in June. He later ensured a place in horse racing history after pushing 3-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra to give her all at the wire of the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga.
After achieving graded stakes placings earlier in the year, Awesome Gem road tripped to Chicago where he splashed home victorious in the $500,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup(G2). Our star gelding later made his third consecutive appearance at the Breeders' Cup races in November. El Gato Malo competed in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
In a fairy tale ending to an exciting year our Cinderella horse, Amazed By Grace, finished third in the Grade One La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita on December 26th. Once deemed unlikely to return to the starting gate, this Philly Park filly proved she belongs on the big stage. Grace reeled off five consecutive wins in only two months to bring her earnings to over $188,000 in eight starts.
In 2008 our nearly $3 million in purse earnings was among the top in the country. Our Thoroughbred racehorses contested over 40 stakes races. 29 of those stakes races were graded, and our horses won or placed in 16 of them. Overall, 28 different horses won races. West Point horses won at 18 tracks, achieving an overall winning percentage of 22% and 49% in the money.
El Gato Malo, (The Bad Cat) scored in the Grade III San Rafael Stakes in January and added the Grade III Lone Star Derby to his winning achievements in the Spring.
One of the stable's biggest stars in '08, Macho Again, followed up a solid victory in the Derby Trial with a second place Preakness placing behind Big Brown. After contesting the Belmont Stakes, Macho Again delivered a thrilling winning performance in the Grade II Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga. Although he encountered bad racing luck in the Grade I Travers three weeks later, Macho Again rebounded to finish a strong second in the Grade II Super Derby in New Orleans.
Awesome Gem sparkled on the West Coast when he competed for the second consecutive year in the Breeders' Cup and then ventured overseas to contest the Group I Hong Kong Mile.
Lear's Princess, Rereadthefootnotes, and Tropic Storm each placed in one or more graded stakes throughout the year.
