COOL HAL WINS

January 04, 2004 · By · Share

Cool Hal scored a game victory in his two-turn debut on 1/4 at Aqueduct.  Breaking from the rail, Cool Hal away got away well and contested the pace into the first turn.  Shaun Bridgmohan backed Hal off the leader down the backstretch conserving some energy even though the pace was rather slow.  The half-mile went in a rather pedestrian 50.1.  Bridgmohan angled Cool Hal off the rail down the backstretch to take aim at the leader, and Cool Hal moved with a half-length of the lead entering the turn.  Bridgmohan settled down on Hal and asked him to run in the turn, and Hal responded gaining a half-length advantage as the field entered the stretch.  Cool Hal seemed to lose a little focus midway through the stretch allowing the eventual runner up to get back on even terms with him, but as soon as Hal eyeballed him again he spurted away and refused to be passed.  Hal covered the mile and a sixteenth in 1:49.3, and the margin of victory was a half-length.  Cool Hal earned $26,400 for the victory and pushed his career earnings over $55,000 in only 4 career starts.
