CRIMSON STAG RUNS SECOND IN MATT WINN STAKES

May 14, 2005 · By · Share

Crimson Stag, West Point's talented son of Glitterman, ran a game second in the $100,000 added Matt Winn Stakes on May 14th at Churchill Downs.  Facing a highly accomplished field, Crimson Stag sat in second early in the race as odds-on favorite Razor jumped out to a quick lead.  The shape of the race changed on raceday when the other primary speed in the race scratched from the spot leaving Razor as the lone speed in the race.  Crimson Stag was caught chasing the speed and was unable to make a dent in Razor's margin after getting away with the uncontested pace.  However, Crimson Stag dug in gamely in the stretch and was able to hold sway over the rest of the field to draw off late to hold second by over three-lengths.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano said, "This is a really good colt.  He ran hard the entire way...I had to go inside when Razor came out coming into the stretch, and the inside really wasn't the place to be(with all the moisture in the track).  It was deeper on the inside, but I had to choose and I wanted to keep the horse going.  When I got into him in the stretch he kept giving me more.  This horse is going to win a lot of races.  He's got a lot of talent and a huge heart."

The placing netted Crimson Stag another $21,940.  The $80,000 purchase as a two-year-old has now earned over $265,000 from eleven career starts.
