SHADE THE CAT WINS!!

January 17, 2006 · By · Share
Shade The Cat started off 2006 on the right foot winning by three-lengths on January 14th at Aqueduct.  Mike Luzzi saw the way the track was playing, so he took Shade The Cat back to near the back of the pack and allowed him to settle in ninth through the first half-mile in 49.2.  He steered him wide down the backstretch and into the clear launching an attack into the turning while going three wide.  He swept into contention entering the top of the stretch going from near the back of the pack into a close up third.  Mike Luzzi kept Shade The Cat to task and Shade The Cat drew off in the final furlong to win by three-lengths.

Rick's assistant Rusty said, "This horse will give you everything he's got when you send him out there.  You just have to place him where he can win.  He's a real kind horse to train and he will give you a true effort every time out.  Mike gave him a great trip today, and we got the job done.

Mike Luzzi said, "Speed wasn't holding up great, so I took the horse back and got him to settle.  He's never been a difficult horse to steer, so I wanted to save as much ground on the first turn as possible.  We got a good relaxed position, then I edged out a bit down the backside.  When I asked him at about the three-eighths pole he picked up his feet and really got going.  I knew we had the race won at the top of the stretch.  I just had to keep after him a little bit and he got the job done."

This was Shade The Cat'ss second career win from eight starts.  The victory pushed his career earnings over $26,000.
