Irish Smoke dominant in debut
Irish Smoke, our two-year-old daughter of Smoke Glacken, showed the utmost professionalism in her debut and scored a resounding victory at Saratoga. Irish Smoke broke well and relaxed beautifully through the early stages of the five-furlong race. Irish Smoke sat fourth early as a contentious pace developed in front of her. Jockey Julien Leparoux gave Irish Smoke her cue on the turn and she launched a four wide move. She lengthened stride like a champion and swallowed up the pacesetters. Leparoux had to do nothing more than show her the whip, and Irish Smoke drew off in the last sixteenth to a widening two-length victory. Irish Smoke stopped the teletimer for the five-furlong distance in an impressive 57.3.
Trainer Patrick Biancone said, "That was really nice. This filly has a lot of speed. I thought we might be on the lead, but Julien (Leparoux) said that the filly came back to him beautifully. He decided to sit and let them go, and when he asked her she took off. She was much the best, and she galloped out very nicely."
A $285,000 purchase, Irish Smoke earned $37,200 for the victory. We plan to take a hard look at the $250,000 Grade 1 Spinaway on September 2nd at Saratoga for Irish Smoke's next start.
