Awesome Gem seeks stable's sixth Grade 1

September 27, 2007 · By · Share

No stable has accomplished what West Point Thoroughbreds has done in 2007. With five Grade 1 wins since June, the stable sits at the top of the heap when it comes to success this year. However, we have some unfinished business. Awesome Gem, our graded stakes winner, seeks to punch his ticket to the $5,000,000 Breeders' Cup Classic(G1) at Monmouth Park in the $500,000 Goodwood Stakes(G1) this Saturday at Santa Anita. The Goodwood is a Breeders' Cup Challenge win and you're in race.  Therefore, a win would guarantee Awesome Gem a starting spot in the Classic.

However, Awesome Gem's resume is already very strong. He enters the Goodwood off of a heart stopping second place finish in the $1,000,000 Pacific Classic(G1) at Del Mar. This winter, Awesome Gem captured the San Fernando Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita.

Awesome Gem has drawn post #8 of 10 in Goodwood with regular pilot David Flores back in the irons. Trainer Craig Dollase could not be more pleased with how Awesome Gem enters the Goodwood. Dollase said, "Awesome Gem is doing better than he ever has. I could not be more pleased with him coming into the race. We came within a few feet of winning the Pacific Classic. These are the kind of races that we all aim to win. If you want to make it to the big show, then you have to step up to the plate. I think Awesome Gem is ready to take his swing."

Post time for the Goodwood is 7:30 EDT/4:30 PDT.
