Filly Continues Winning Ways
For many people the New Year means a time for new resolutions and new beginnings, but for Justwhistledixie, the turning of the calendar apparently just means more of the same. The three-year-old daughter of Dixie Union dominated five rivals en route to her third straight victory in the $70,000 Ruthless Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Sent off as the prohibitive favorite, Justwhistledixie showed a new dimension in taking her third straight. In her previous two victories, she led throughout, but in the Ruthless, she sat off the lead and took control at the top of the stretch on her way to a dominating three-and-a-half length win.
Jockey Rajiv Maragh, riding 'Dixie for the first time, stalked longshot Indian Rush through an opening half mile of 46 seconds, and then took control turning for home. "Wow! She has some kick," said the extremely impressed Maragh shortly after the race. "I only had to hit her once, and she just cruised to the lead. She got to the front so easily, she kind of let up a little bit so I had to shake her up a bit, but I didn't ask her for anything close to her best. She's an awesome filly."
Assistant trainer Artie Magnusson was just as thrilled with Justwhistledixie's performance over the inner dirt strip. "She's such a nice filly, just so handy. She's done everything we've asked of her so far."
For her victory in the Ruthless Stakes, 'Dixie earned $42,000 and has now won over $125,000 in her short five race career. It was her third consecutive win overall and second consecutive stakes victory.
