Macho Again and Awesome Gem Top Weekend Action

June 11, 2009 · By · Share

Veterans Look to Score in Graded Stakes Events

Macho Again and Awesome Gem both head to the track this weekend in search of their next big win.  Each of the two horses has already earned over a million dollars during their racing careers, and will look to add to their impressive totals in graded stakes races.

Macho Again is scheduled to race in the $600,000 G1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs on Saturday.  The four-year-old son of Macho Uno will be looking to bounce back to the form he showed in winning the G2 New Orleans Handicap at the Fair Grounds earlier this spring.

He comes into the race in extremely good form according to trainer Dallas Stewart"He's doing as well as he's ever done.  He's been training better than ever."  Macho Again is scheduled to take on seven rivals in the G1 event.  "Sure it's a tough field, but if we can get a good pace to run into, I think we've got a big shot," said Stewart.

Robby Albarado will have the mount on Macho Again in the Foster, which is scheduled to be run at 5:29pm EST.

Also, on Saturday, Awesome Gem takes on a full field in the $250,000 G2 Californian at Hollywood Park.  He comes into the race off a fast-closing, near miss in the Berkley Stakes at Golden Gate last month.

Awesome Gem's trainer, Craig Dollase, is hoping his six-year-old gets some much deserved racing luck this weekend.  "It's frustrating because he's about three lengths in total away from having three or four more wins, but hopefully Saturday will be his day.  He deserves it."

Alex Solis, who was aboard Gem in the Berkley, will once again have the mount in this Saturday's Californian which is scheduled to be run at 5:00pm PDT/ 8:00pm EST.

While Macho Again and Awesome Gem will be headlining the weekend, our attention will not just be focused on those two as West Point Thoroughbreds is also scheduled to have four more runners head to the post.  On Saturday, Erin's Golden Star and Reine des Lions will look for wins in their respective races at Philadelphia Park.

Then, on Sunday, Greg's Lassy looks to win his second consecutive race as he takes to the track at Finger Lakes, while Cat On The Line returns to action at Belmont Park.

All in all, it amounts to another thrilling weekend of racing action with WPT.
