The Return of Saratoga Russell
'Russ' Returns after 15 Months on Sidelines
Saratoga Russell is scheduled to make his eagerly anticipated return to the starting gate this weekend in an allowance race at Monmouth Park. Russ is entered in an 'a-other-than' allowance this Sunday. It will be his first start since his eighth-place finish in the G3 Gotham Stakes in March of 2008.
The four-year-old son of Trippi suffered a throat injury in that race and was forced to miss significant time while the injury was treated.
"Saratoga Russell is undoubtedly one of the most talented horses we've ever owned," said WPT President Terry Finley. "He's been training very well as of late, and we're excited to get him back in the starting gate."
Prior to the Gotham, Russ won two of his first three races, and finished a game second in the other. His two electrifying wins last winter turned a lot of heads in the sport, and he was made the 8/5 favorite in last year's G3 Derby prep at Aqueduct.
Saratoga Russell has been training extremely well as of late. He's actually slightly ahead of schedule because he's been doing so well in the mornings. Originally, he wasn't scheduled to return until July.
"Hopefully, Russ returns to the form we saw from him last year because when he's good, he's scary good. We're excited for his partners," said Finley.
