Del Mar notes: Opening week

July 28, 2009 · By · Share

It was another incredible Opening Day at Del Mar where 85 degree sunshine set the stage for record crowds to enjoy great racing and the spectacular pageantry and color (maybe a little more color than usual this year) that can be expected of the much anticipated Opening Day.

Among the excitement and rush of opening week I was happy to see that numerous WPT Partners made it out to spend some quality time at the barns with Craig and Carla.  Besides being the captain of the EZ-GO golf cart (the preferred mode of transportation of West Point at the track) I enjoy seeing partners experience the backstretch, seeing the horses train and let's not forget all the carrots.

The horses seem to be fully acclimated to their summer digs and the Pacific Ocean breezes. It's been an Awesome (Gem) week as our superstar Awesome Gem continues to show up at the highest levels while giving us a heart pumping thrill with a late charging 2nd in the Grade-1 Eddie Read. We look forward to his next start at Del Mar towards the end of the meet.

In addition to the great racing, a 6-foot-by-30-foot PEB mural (devoted to the history of celebrities and horseman who have been a part of the Del Mar racing scene) was officially recognized.  I think I speak for myself and the other attending WPT Partners when I say... what a special and awe-inspiring moment it was to witness the caricatures (by Pierre Bellocq, of the Daily Racing Form) come to life as the most interesting racing personalities gathered at the track to be honored, admired and of course...autograph PEB posters.

This year was even more special having Reni on our team.  Reni is involved with all of the behind-the-scenes work of our summer events, accommodations and other details that the WPT Partners will experience during their visits to Del Mar.   The first weekend kicked-off Daybreak at Del Mar and was a huge success with lots of people attending.   Including several Partners who took advantage of the tables we reserve in the center of the Clubhouse Terrace just for West Point.

I'm looking forward to an exciting summer meet here at Del Mar and the opportunity to see all the Partners that plan to take part in the number of races we have coming up over the next few weeks.  I also want to mention that we invite our Partners to the planned WPT Events (the first...this Friday "Fun in the Sun" at the beach) and Daybreak at Del Mar every Saturday and Sunday morning from 7:30 to 9:30 at the Clubhouse Terrace.

It's going to be a great, unforgettable thumbs-up show!
Stay tuned for more.
