Belo Sorte Wins Again!
Who would have thought it? Let's take a trip in the time machine to January of 2009. Belo Sorte would be 80/1 against Quality Road in an allowance race. A race that would be his last for over a year. Fast forward to Friday. Belo Sorte would try for his third win in four starts in 2010 and would go postward as the 4/5 favorite in an allowance race. Oh what a difference sixteen months makes!
Belo Sorte broke well and went gate-to-wire in the seven-furlong "a other than" allowance at Churchill Downs. Setting a pressured pace, Belo Sorte lead by a half-length through a quarter-mile in 23 flat and a half-mile in 46.3. Belo Sorte responded gamely when challenged in the stretch and drew off again in the late stages to win by a widening two-lengths.
Trainer Dale Romans said, "The horse was training great. I knew he was going to run well. I just wanted him to break and be close. There was not a lot of speed in the race. Robby did a nice job of not letting him go too fast. Whe they challenged him he had another gear. He won like a 4/5 shot should."
Jockey Robby Albarado said, "He broke great. I rode him like the best horse in the race. We made the lead, but he wasn't working too hard. When they challenged him and I switched my stick to the left hand he took off again. He was much the best."
Belo Sorte earned $24,000 for his third victory of the year. He now has four wins from seven careers starts. Look for him to return to the starting gate in a few weeks at Churchill Downs.
