Fasig-Tipton Sale Grad Scholar Athlete Entered in Palm Beach (G3)

February 26, 2016 · By Erin Birkenhauer · Share

On March 4, 2015, West Point Thoroughbreds signed the ticket on a handsome bay Canadian-bred son of Einstein at the Fasig-Tipton Sale at Gulfstream. Almost exactly a year later, the colt (now named Scholar Athlete) returns to the Gulfstream paddock. He’s not up for sale this time, he’s competing in the $150,000 Palm Beach Stakes (G3) on Saturday.

Scholar Athlete broke his maiden at Woodbine in September in his second career start before going on to finish third in the Coronation Futurity for Canadian-bred 2-year-olds that fall. Trainer Graham Motion then brought the colt down to Florida as freshened him for his 3-year-old campaign.

He drew a terrible outside post in his 3-year-old debut (allowance race on February 6 at Gulfstream), but still came running at the end to finish third despite a wide trip. The effort gave us and Graham the confidence we needed to step up in class second time off the layoff.

“He overcame quite a bit of adversity in his last start,” said WPT president Terry Finley. “We thought about scratching because of the bad post, but knew he needed a run under his belt to get the year started. He jumped up and surprised us a little bit. We set our sights on the Battaglia up at Turfway after the allowance race, but after noodling on decided to stay closer to home. If he runs well on Saturday, we’ll probably take a hard look at the Spiral at Turfway the first week of April. I don’t know if he’s a Derby horse, but he sure is a top, top contender for the Queen’s Plate.”

The Palm Beach is race 11 (post time 4:58 ET) on Gulfstream’s Saturday card. Scholar Athlete breaks from post eight in the field of 14 with the nation’s leading rider, Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons.
