Colonel Nina Breaks Maiden at Gulfstream

May 03, 2016 · By Erin Birkenhauer · Share

Colonel Nina showed tremendous improvement in her third start, winning by 3 3/4 lengths on May 1 at Gulfstream Park for new trainer Ralph Nicks.

The filly finished last in her previous start, but was diagnosed with a guttural pouch infection after the race, making it a total throwout.

Under hot young jockey Tyler Gaffalione, she sat a perfect stalking trip before coming under a drive at the top of the stretch and pulling away.

By Colonel John out of the Red Bullet mare Mystery Bullet, Colonel Nina is a 3-year-old Florida-bred. She’s will be the first horse in West Point’s history to race in Florida during the summer months.

“We have number of Florida-breds in the barn and felt having a Florida-based trainer would be a huge asset to us,” said WPT Chief Operating Officer Tom Bellhouse. “Gulfstream Park has done a great job expanding their year-round racing program. We’ve admired Ralph’s body of work for quite a while and the racing world really took notice when he was leading trainer with a 27% win rate at the 2015 Gulfstream summer meet.”
