Fire for Effect & Moonlightnmidnight Win

Fire for Effect and Corey Lanerie

This time of year, it’s really exciting to have a newly turned 3-year-old break their maiden going two turns. It’s even better to have two.

Fire for Effect and Moonlightnmidnight got their pictures taken over the weekend. Both horses were purchased by the West Point buying team at the 2016 OBS March 2-Year-Old in Training Sale.

Dale Romans trainee Fire for Effect broke his maiden at Gulfstream on Saturday in just his second career start. The son of Smart Strike came runnin’ in a one-turn race at Churchill Downs in November and we knew he’d relish the added distance. He didn’t earn a flashy Beyer Speed Figure (68), but certainly did it the right way, settling beautifully and running them down when asked by Corey Lanerie. Where he’ll run next hasn’t been decided, but one thing’s for certain, we’re Kentucky Derby dreamin’!

Sunday afternoon Louisiana-bred filly Moonlightnmidnight romped by eight lengths in a Fair Grounds maiden special weight that was rained off the turf and moved to the main track. Under leading jockey Florent Geroux, the Wilburn filly battled for the lead down the backside before kicking clear in the stretch. Trained by Dallas Stewart, she’s steadily improved since her debut at Saratoga over the summer. Like Fire For Effect, she broke her maiden in her first try around two turns. If the quarantine at Fair Grounds is lifted, she could be pointed for the Louisiana Premier Night Starlet on February 11 at Delta Downs.
