Entry 16

March 20, 2009 · By · Share

Our class of 2009 is just about, if not, totally complete.  We went all over the country to sort through about ten thousand horses to come up with 22 that make up our new class.  Hard work but so much fun.  Can't wait to see which youngsters are the "ones" this time next year.

Busy couple of weeks coming up.  Justwhistledixie and Mr. Fantasy will run in the next two weeks in final preps for Kentucky Derby weekend.

One of the aspects of our business I find so interesting is the next six weeks before the Derby.  Several horses totally off the radar screen will jump on the train with huge performances over the next three weeks.  Today in the Lane's End at Turfway, a colt named Hold Me Back put himself squarely in the Derby window with a big win.  He had not run since November.  What a nice performance.  Goes to show you - it doesn't matter what they do as two year-olds or early three year-olds - it matters most what these horses do in late March and early April before the Derby.

A good week for the little gray colt that could stabled at Fair Grounds - Macho Again.  It's very cool - and rewarding - to see how a trainer, given a free rein and a solid prospect, develops and mentors a nice horse into a budding superstar.   Training horses is a tough profession - you have to be tough on the outside but soft on the inside.  And, you have to love horses - all of our trainers love the horses in their care.

Until next week.

Terry
