Wow, what a Derby weekend. A cowboy trainer from New Mexico trailered his horse 21 hours to Churchill Downs and left with the Derby Trophy.
The Derby winner was a bad fourth in his last start (the Sunland Park Derby). Over 15 jockeys turned down the mount on the winner. Calvin Borel's agent was not even at the races. He had had lunch near us on Friday, Oaks Day. Late in the day on Friday, someone asked him if he was coming back to the track on Derby Day. His reply? "No, Calvin has a light day of mounts and is riding a horse with no shot in the Derby - I'm staying home to watch it on the TV".
We had a tough Friday when Dixie was scratched two hours before the Kentucky Oaks. The way Rachel Alexandra ran, we would have been second at best. What a filly. She could be the best horse we've seen in a long, long time. I was not totally sold before the race - I am sold in a huge way right now.
The crowds were solid over Derby Weekend. I know we have issues in this business. But - don't count us out yet - there are too many people who are over top passionate with this business. Over $165 million was bet on the Derby Card.
Preakness next up in the Triple Crown run. We may have a starter in the form of Mr. Fantasy - more to come. Have a good week.
