2013 was the third best year in our company’s history — West Point Thoroughbreds landed in Equibase’s top 15 North American racehorse owners in total earnings driven by 59 wins and a 21% win rate. In mid-November I set a goal to reach $3.5 million in earnings. We fell just short of that figure, but it was a rock-solid year nonetheless.

Seven 2013 stakes wins and a 53% overall ITM rate increased WPT’s average earnings per start $4k over the previous year from $8k to $12k.

Our clients are seeing the manifestation of major changes our company made in 2011. We revamped our buying process, incorporating stride analysis and heart scan technology to identify the best horses. As we collect data on both the horses we purchased and those we didn’t purchase, we’ll continue tweaking our process and embracing the ever-changing world of technology. We’re working to quantify this statement, but I know we’re seeing an improvement in the soundness of our runners. More to come on that front.

What’s significant about our earnings is that they are not overly influenced by the success of just one horse in a big race. We’re using data in our management more than ever, and with the help of a new program we’re able to quantify race placement and get a much clearer picture of the competition at all levels.

WPT is locked and loaded for an even better year in 2014. With seven individual 2-year-old winners in 2013, including Commanding Curve and Empire Dreams, we’ll be making some noise on the KY Derby trail.

We also have a number of talented older horses poised to add stakes wins to their resumes in the first quarter:

Twilight Eclipse is on target to make the trip to Dubai for the Sheema Classic in March after prepping in the Mac Diarmida on February 15 at Gulfstream.
Toasting figures to be one of the favorites in the Sunshine Millions Distaff on January 18.
China Prince runs for $250,000 in the Cal-Cup on January 25.
Suns Out Guns Out is working backwards from the $1,500,000 Charles Town Classic in April.
Awesome Vision will see plenty of stakes action this winter in New York.

I’m headed to Florida on January 17 as we have no less than four horses pointed for races at Gulfstream that weekend. It sure would be nice to get “off the duck” and notch our first stakes win of the year with Toasting in the Sunshine Millions.

Good racing,

Terry
