Here are my favorite things to do during racing season (in no particular order)….

Family Friendly

  1. West Point Partners, grab a latte from Coffee Bean then head over to Donuts at Del Mar on Saturday and Sunday mornings and watch the workouts from the frontside.

  1. Stop by Bully’s and have breakfast or get Craig’s favorite, the roast beef sandwich, for lunch.

  1. Head to Milton’s Deli for breakfast or an early lunch. This is a favorite spot amongst jockeys and trainers.

  1. Take a sandwich from Board and Brew and walk or drive to the beach, Seagrove Park, or Powerhouse Park to enjoy the sunset.

  1. Enjoy concerts in Powerhouse Park all summer long.

  1. Have an organic latte while you wait for a table at Claire’s on Cedros in Solana Beach. Between their homemade bread and caprese frittata, you can’t go wrong.

  1. Sweet tooth? Head to Extraordinary Desserts. They have best desserts and after dinner drinks.

  1. Grab a great burger and beer at Chief’s Burgers and Brew in Solana Beach. This place is right near the train station.

  1. Stroll/shop/eat on Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach.

  1. Enjoy concerts every Thursday during the summer at Fletcher Cove Park in Solana Beach.

  1. Rent a paddleboard or water craft at the Carlsbad Paddle Club.

  1. Visit the Carlsbad Outlet Mall if you need a shopping fix.

  1. Stroll/eat/shop in downtown Encinitas. Also, visit Moonlight Beach — there’s a fire pit and kid’s park.

  1. Take it all in on a beautiful coastal drive and see beautiful beaches of La Jolla, Del Mar, Solana, Cardiff, Encinitas & Carlsbad.

  1. Spend an afternoon at Birch Aquarium in La Jolla at UC San Diego.

  1. Stroll downtown La Jolla and La Jolla Cove. Enjoy Happy Hour at George’s at the Cove Oceanview Restaurant. Visit the seals at the children’s pool at La Jolla Cove.

  1. Tour the USS Midway and have lunch at the Fish Market right on the water in downtown San Diego.

  1. Catch a Padres game at Petco Park.

  1. Have dinner at Rimel’s Rotisserie on the roof of Petco Park is you’re not in the mood for a hot dog and peanuts.

  1. Head to one of the Dollase girls’ favorites spots, the San Diego Zoo,

  1. Ride the SEAL Tours boat for a unique city and bay tour and also walk around the Seaport Village in San Diego.

  1. Catch a show at San Diego Symphony Summer Pops, an annual outdoor concert series right on the San Diego Bay.

  1. Spend the night in a tent right by the elephants at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido. This is a great place to walk around, and if you plan ahead, you can stay overnight.

  1. Rent 4-seater car bikes on Coronado, and ride all day around the island. You can also book fishing and kayak trips and other outdoor activities at Hotel Del Coronado.

  1.  Visit Sea World San Diego.

  1. Visit Belmont Park (no, not in NY). This is a beachfront amusement park in Mission Beach. Take a walk on the beach after you ride the coasters.

  1. Enjoy the diversity of the Balboa Park Museums.

  1. Stop by Old Town San Diego if you’re feeling like Mexican food. Visit the Old Town Tequila Factory, or sip on a margarita at Fred’s Mexican Cafe.

  1. Ride the downtown ferry across the bay to Coronado.

  1. Check out Legoland theme park in Carlsbad.

Things to Do With Adults

  1. Take advantage of the Del Mar Summer Concert Series which are held after the races.

  1. Have dinner and/or drinks and enjoy the sunset at Jake’s Del Mar.

  1. After the races enjoy a drink at Brigantine Seafood Restaurant. Catch Fish Taco Tuesday while you sit on the balcony and watch the tractors prepare the racetrack for Wednesday morning training.

  1. Enjoy music/dancing at the Belly Up in Solana Beach. Have a beer at Culture Brewing Company on Cedros.

  1. Visit the Fairmont Grand Del Mar and schedule a massage.

  1. Have a date night at the Pamplemousse Grill. You can bring the kids here, but this is also a fun place for a night out as a couple or with friends. The Lobster Grilled Cheese is amazing, and they have delicious desserts and wine. This is a popular spot for racetrackers.

  1. Make a reservation for The Market Restaurant in Del Mar as soon as you know your dates. It’s very popular and well worth it.

  1. Enjoy happy hour at Altitude Sky Lounge at the Marriott right across the street from Petco Park in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. Altitude is a nightclub as well.

  1. Order the seafood appetizer at Donovan’s in La Jolla. It’s more like an entree and is not always on the menu, so be sure to ask for it.

  1. Have a sunset cocktail at the Hotel Del Coronado. Stroll the beaches and sidewalks.
