A Women’s Partnership With A Cause- Presenting Flashy In Pink / Tuesday, May 24, 2011

If you watched the 2010 Kentucky Oaks, you probably noticed one color that stood out in the crowd – pink.

If you watched the 2010 Kentucky Oaks, you probably noticed one color that stood out in the crowd – pink. Inspired by the amount of people that embraced the cause of raising awareness of breast cancer, West Point Thoroughbreds decided to create a racing partnership that encourages women to join the ranks of ownership and simultaneously helps a worthy cause.


"We know women make up a majority of the viewing audience for the Kentucky Derby. They are interested in the sport beyond the obvious competitive and wagering aspects. They also enjoy the pageantry, parties, and social activities racing at elite levels provides," explains Debbie Finley, Chief Administrative Officer for West Point Thoroughbreds and architect of this new initiative. According to Debbie, "Over 60% of our employees are women, and we wanted to encourage more women to participate in Thoroughbred ownership as well as give back to an important cause."


A two-year-old filly now appropriately named FLASHY IN PINK by West Point Kentucky Derby starter and Grade One winner Flashy Bull will be trained by Todd Pletcher and campaign on the New York, Florida, and Kentucky circuit for the ladies. When the filly begins her career, 2.5% of her winnings plus a 2.5% match from West Point Thoroughbreds will be donated to a charity associated with breast cancer awareness.


While this partnership is open to anyone no matter their gender, with an increasing number of women joining its Partnerships, West Point anticipates many of its current female Partners and spouses, mothers, sisters, and friends of Partners will be excited to band together. Creating a partnership of camaraderie, friendship and memory making experiences racing their filly up and down the east coast is one of the main goals of this initiative. Layer on the contribution to a worthy cause, and the ladies of West Point believe this is one partnership that will add a new destination for ladies who lunch – trackside dining.
