Brokered Wins Down the Hill at Santa Anita / Friday, February 21, 2014

Handsome chestnut Brokered aka “Big puppy” put in a powerful performance over Santa Anita’s downhill turf course over the weekend, earning a career best 92 Beyer Speed Figure and 5.25 on the Ragozin Sheets.

After breaking well under Corey Nakatani, Brokered settled in third for the run down the hill. He ranged up on the turn, didn’t bat an eyelash when they crossed over from turf to dirt, and continued on gamely down the stretch to prevail by a head.

“He handled going down the hill like a pro,” said conditioner Craig Dollase. “I give Corey a lot of credit today, he suggested going down the hill with this horse after his last race. I’m thinking about cutting his blinkers back or taking them off completely because I don’t think he saw that horse coming on his outside until right before the wire. I’ve always believed in Brokered, and he’s developed into a very nice four-year-old.”

“Everybody around the barn calls this horse ‘big puppy’ because he’s got such a great disposition,” said WPT president Terry Finley. “He’s super friendly and always looking for treats. I give Craig a lot of credit for being patient with him. He ran well off the layoff, and we were itching for that breakthrough race. Eddington’s progeny seem to get better with age.”

Look for Brokered to stay on the downhill course in his next trip to the races.
