ELMONT, NY – It had been exactly 12 months since Cinco de Mayo Mio won a race. This Oct. 14 on the anniversary of her 2010 score at Belmont Park, she pulled a 9-1 upset for the black and gold.

“We’d been knocking on the door at Gulfstream and Saratoga earlier this season, but I guess she just likes winning on the fourteenth of October,” trainer Tom Albertrani joked. “Her last race was a complete throwout. She didn’t do well over the very sloppy going. We’re glad to have her back in winning form.”

Our 4-year-old daughter of El Corredor tracked the frontrunning Emily Allstar from close range early on in the $54,000 allowance feature for fillies and mares. She moved to the inside under jockey Ramon Dominguez when the leader went wide into the turn, shook off another challenge from Emily Allstar near the eighth pole, and edged clear under a drive to win by 1 ¾ lengths. “She’s a tough, hard-trying filly,” jockey Ramon Dominguez said. “The other horse tried to come back and catch her, but she wouldn’t let her by.”

Terry Finley said, “It’s great to see this filly back in the winner’s circle. She got pretty sick on us earlier this year, so it’s even sweeter to have her back. Tom’s done a great job with her and had her ready for a big effort. We’ll sit down over the next couple weeks and determine where she’ll go for the winter.”
