Cleveland Sound stretches out around two turns for the first time in Saturday’s $100,000 Iroquois Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs. A win stamps his ticket to the West Coast for the $2,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on November 1 at Santa Anita.

Trained by Graham Motion, this son of More Than Ready broke his maiden at first asking at Delaware Park on July 10 before running an encouraging fourth in the Saratoga Special on August 10.

Trained by Graham Motion, this son of More Than Ready broke his maiden at first asking at Delaware Park on July 10 before running an encouraging fourth in the Saratoga Special on August 10.

“I thought he ran very credibly in the Special,” said Motion. “With his pedigree I think could have a bright future on the turf, but he’s run well on the dirt and we felt the Iroquois would be a good spot to stretch him out.”

“This colt settled and made a big run in the Saratoga Special but didn’t really have anywhere to go at the top of the stretch,” said WPT president Terry Finley. “He hasn’t run the flashiest numbers in his first two starts, but is on the improve and is very mature mentally. That’s half the battle with two-year-olds especially at at this time of year.”

It’s worth noting that Cleveland Sound did not race on Lasix in his first two starts, but adds it for the Iroquois. Motion horses running with first time Lasix strike at a superb 31%.

Shaun Bridgmohan has the call on Cleveland Sound. He breaks from post six in the field of time. Post time is 4:55 ET.
