I awoke Saturday morning, Belmont day, determined to keep busy all day. I have 10 hour wait….Ugh this is going be a long day! I begin to think about all the race days that we have had a runner going, and the butterflies stir within my tummy. I kept asking myself, can he do it? Will today be the day? I remember saying with a giggle, If it cannot be us (WPT), then let it be my little Victor Espinoza! I call him my hot tub buddy…..roll back to 1999 – Breeders Cup weekend - Gulfstream Race Track and our obsessiveness with Unbridled horses…our first Breeders Cup weekend live! Victor, sitting across from me in the hot tub (me not knowing who he is but certain he is a Jockey he so little). I finally asked him his name and hand him a towel, he is shaking from the breeze! As I remember Anees winning the Breeders Cup Juvenile---Chills ring through my body - just like I was still there. American Pharoah has the same breeding - including Empire Maker. He can do it, I chanted to myself, he can do it! As with every race, be it our own horse with WPT or a partners, I chant quietly at the beginning, OMG, OMG, OMG, until that last 16th, when I explode with bellowing screams, egging the jockey on and then pleading, “please, please, please”… but this time, I am not pleading, I don’t even think I was breathing! Tears are streaming down face and the smile cannot be wiped off – for hours!
