Gold Megillah Breaks Maiden by 18 1/2 Lengths at Churchill Downs! / Thursday, November 17, 2011

LOUISVILLE, KY – It isn’t often that a horse fulfills the racetrack lingo “running off the screen,” but Gold Megillah did just that when he broke his maiden by 18 ½ lengths Nov. 16 at Churchill Downs.

Jockey Edgar Prado was in the saddle aboard the Graham Motion trainee, who settled in hand in fourth behind the early leaders, reeled them in with a bold four-wide move, was seven lengths in front by mid-stretch, and finished the 1 1/16 miles much the best over the sloppy, sealed main track.

The wet surface didn’t give Motion reason for pause when the race came off the grass on a rainy day at Churchill. Although our 2-year-old son of Purim hadn’t been on the dirt since a fourth-place effort in his debut at Saratoga this summer (when we couldn’t get a suitable turf race to go), he had been training well over the Louisville oval. “I wasn’t concerned when the race was washed off the turf,” Motion said. “He’s had some very good weeks of training over this track, even on some days when it was very wet. He’s still learning, and should only get better with seasoning. This is a nice colt.”

Hall of Fame rider Prado said, “I had to ask him a little bit on the turn, but then he took off. After this race he could be very good on both surfaces. I had a perfect trip.”

Partner Diane Kurtz led Gold Megillah into the winner’s circle and lost a shoe in the mud along the way, but she didn’t even care – she walked in with one shoe on and one shoe off!

Gold Megillah will ship with Motion’s winter string to Palm Meadows and gear up for his 2012 3-year-old campaign. The Partners could not be more excited to have a talented, versatile young horse with a bright future in the barn.
