Pure Athlete Commanded Attention

Alternation Colt

  • Beautiful Mover by Sire of a Kentucky Oaks Winner

  • Headed to Red-Hot Barn of Cherie DeVaux

  • Family of Champion 2yo Jaywalk

We’re looking for athletes above all at the 2-year-old sales, and you’d be hard-pressed to find many better ones at this stage of the game than this stunning colt we added to the West Point roster toward the end of Day 1 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale in Maryland.

Hip 271, from the Randy Miles consignment that brought Grade I-winning 2-year-old Carson’s Run to West Point in 2023 as well as myriad other stone-cold runners through our history working together, recorded a powerful :10 1/5 breeze over the dirt track with a well-balanced stride. He cornered beautifully into the tight turn and galloped out like he was ready to do it all over again. He’s a fluid mover who stands over a lot of ground and is well built, particularly for an April foal.

Alternation, a seven-figure earner on the racetrack, was bred by the legendary Pin Oak Stud outfit and is out of a terrific Seattle Slew dam who won or placed in 10 stakes races. A half-brother to Grade I-winning millionaire Higher Power, Alternation is responsible for Serengeti Empress, the brilliant multimillionaire filly who captured the 2019 Kentucky Oaks and came back to win the Grade I Ballerina Stakes as a 4-year-old in 2020.

On the female side of his pedigree, this colt shares a second dam with Jaywalk, who dominated the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and Grade I Frizette Stakes en route to Eclipse Award honors as champion 2-year-old filly. This colt’s dam, a 14-time winner on the track, is 2-for-2 with getting her foals to the winner’s circle so far, including Jayhawk, who added a graded stakes placing as a juvenile last season.

This beautiful colt will be heading to the shedrow of Cherie DeVaux, whose meteoric success as a trainer reached new heights when she trained our partially-owned Vahva to a scintillating Grade I win on Kentucky Derby day in the Derby City Distaff Stakes. She promptly followed up that triumph with a phenomenal Black-Eyed Susan day at Pimlico where she brought home three stakes trophies.

Price includes all acquisition costs and all training, veterinary, and insurance expenses until January 1, 2025.
