City Zip colt Outlook

A long-striding City Zip colt commanded the attention of West Point's buying team in the OBS April sale.

Long a source of speed and early winners, City Zip's profile has expanded to a wider spectrum recently as he has accounted for champions Dayatthespa and Catch a Glimpse on the grass and Work All Week at 6 furlongs on the dirt, undefeated Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Bulletin, Baffert's Pacific Classic winner and OBS 2-year-old graduate Collected, and now Improbable for the connections of Triple Crown hero Justify.

This colt worked an eighth of a mile in 10 1/5 with a stride length of 25.73 that was more than a foot and a half above average for the April 16 breeze show. He earned a Breeze Fig of 75, one of the best in the sale.

Speedy ability is prominent in this family: his dam is a half-sister to the Grade 2-winning rocketship Gantry, who set a 6-furlong track record for Belmont Park's Widener Turf Course (1:06 4/5), and also to the Grade 2-winning sprinter and popular young sire Central Banker.

The colt was presented by the McKathan Brothers consignment, a long-time fixture in Ocala which is still reeling from the death of J. B. McKathan, who died of a heart attack in February. His brother, Kevin, has pressed forward at the sales and in preparing young stock for West Point and other owners. The McKathans provided the early training lessons for Triple Crown hero American Pharoah and fellow Kentucky Derby winners Silver Charm and Real Quiet.

Price includes all acquisition costs and all training, veterinary, and insurance expenses until January 1, 2020.
