Cupid Colt

    • Grandson of Tapit

    • Excellent breeze, above average stride

    • Hails from same consignor as WPT stakes winner Seven Trumpets

From the first crop of a Grade 1-winning son of Tapit, this chestnut colt just looks fast, and he has been on Christophe Clement’s radar this winter and spring for the promise he has shown in Ocala.

The colt comes from a trusted consignor Randy Miles, who sold future stakes winner Seven Trumpets to West Point a few years back at this very same sale. Seven Trumpets, from a sale price of $205,000, went on to a fabulous racing career that took him to the Breeders’ Cup, to Saratoga, where he finished second in a Grade 1 race, and ultimately to a bankroll of more than $500,000.

Christophe will train the colt and endorsed him to extent that some of his other clients are jumping in to buy a quarter interest.

Campaigned by the Coolmore partnership, Cupid may have been overshadowed by titans in the Bob Baffert barn but he was a serious racehorse, stringing together wins in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes, Grade 2 Indiana Derby, and Grade 2 West Virginia Derby as a 3-year-old and going to notch his biggest score in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita as a 4-year-old. He stands at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud and delivered a top-class talent in his first crop in Desert Dawn, who is a Grade 2 stakes winner and hit the board with a third-place finish in the 2022 Kentucky Oaks (G1).

West Point’s Tom Bellhouse said, “This colt is from the Tapit stallion line, and he is out of a Henny Hughes mare. For those of you who remember Henny Hughes, he was quite possibly one of the fastest horses to run in the last 20 years, just an absolute speedball. And then under the second dam you have a hard-knocking Graded stakes winner in Rated R Superstar, who has won races from ages 3 all the way to age 10 when he competed in the $1-million Oaklawn Handicap last weekend. So in this colt’s pedigree, you see longevity, strength and speed, it’s really a perfect combination.”

Price includes all acquisition costs and all training, veterinary, and insurance expenses until January 1, 2024.

Trainer: Christophe Clement

  • A leading US trainer for over 25 years, Christophe has acquired a reputation for meticulous attention to detail. He intentionally limits the size of his stable to a number that can be kept in just two locations at any point in time.
  • Top runners include Champion 2-time Eclipse Award winner, Gio Ponti, 4-time G1 winner, Tonalist, Gufo, and WPT graded stakes horses Carson’s Run, Decorated Invader, Best Performance, Kertez, and Parnac amongst others.
  • Christophe Clement has been nominated for the U.S. Hall of Fame, and hopefully before long should take his place there, for he is a credit to the sport, a man of unquestionable integrity for whom his honesty and proficiency, and skill as a trainer are a matter of personal pride.

He might be the most handsome horse I have seen on the OBS sales grounds all week. I’m a huge fan of the Tapit line and always loved Henny Hughes as a broodmare sire. We’re all just over the moon to have a colt with this level of natural ability.
