Flameaway Filly

    • Granddaughter of Scat Daddy

    • Eligible for nice series of restricted races

    • Half-sister to  stakes-winning earner of 655k

Gazing at the chestnut specimen in the Ordonez Thoroughbreds consignment for the OBS April sale, Jeff Lifson’s first impression was that this daughter of young sire Flameaway was built like a colt, and a very nice one to boot.

Throw in a sparkling breeze and loads of options as a New York-bred with a residency certification in Virginia that makes her eligible for restricted races at Colonial Downs, and she added up to an exciting first acquisition in Tuesday’s opening session.

The filly worked an eighth of a mile in 10.2 with a stride length that was nearly a foot (0.92) above average for the breeze set. She also galloped out well, according to our bloodstock agent David Ingordo, who deemed the filly’s entire presentation as “OK-plus,” which is high praise in the lexicon of David’s sale notes.

The dam has produced three winners from four foals to race, most notably Maiden Beauty, who debuted with a powerful stakes victory at Belmont Park as a 2-year-old, drawing off to win the Lynbrook Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths. That was truly just the beginning for Maiden Beauty, who wound up with 9 wins from 38 career starts and a bankroll of $655,912.

Flameaway, standing at venerable Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky, is a young sire with a legacy to carry on as a son of the late Scat Daddy, just like Triple Crown hero Justify, who came from the exact same foal crop of 2015. Flameaway was a Graded stakes winner on turf as a 2-year-old at Keeneland, and as a 3-year-old, he overpowered dirt heavyweights Catholic Boy and Vino Rosso in the Grade 3 Sam Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

Price includes all acquisition costs and all training, veterinary, and insurance expenses until January 1, 2024.
