Heads to West Coast Like His Double Grade 1-Winning Sire
First-Crop Sire Was a Hit at Midlantic Sale
Trainer Doug O’Neill Has Won Kentucky Derby Twice, Nearly Did It Again This May
First-crop sire Gormley was a hot commodity at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale. We bid on this colt and got outgunned by one of Doug O’Neill’s clients, but we liked the colt so much that we went back and negotiated a deal to get involved for a slice.
This is an advanced May foal, just now reaching his true second birthday. Despite some greenness, he was exceptional in the training preview, breezing an eighth of a mile in 10.1 with a big gallop out, getting the next eighth in 11.34 and a quarter mile in 24.2.
A big hit for pinhooker Robert Brewer, the colt will be based at Santa Anita with O’Neill, who came up just shy of his third Kentucky Derby win in 10 years, finishing third by a length with Louisiana Derby hero Hot Rod Charlie.
Gormley was a West Coast star himself, winning the Grade 1 Forerunner Stakes as a 2-year-old and coming back to capture the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby at 3. He stands at Spendthrift Farm, where he will look to help fill in the void of his leading sire, Malibu Moon, who died this week at age 24.
Price includes all acquisition costs and all training, veterinary, and insurance expenses until January 1, 2022.
