Athletic colt by earner of over $15 million

Gun Runner Colt

    • Exceptional physical selected by Flightline trainer John Sadler

    • Gun Runner a top sire in the country, leading 3rd crop sire

    • From the famiy of Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour

We thought we were done for the day during Session 3 of the Keeneland September sale, but we called an audible late in the day to bring home another colt in Hip 681, a sharp, athletic-looking son of superstar stallion Gun Runner from a dazzling female family that we simply had to have.

By the Horse of the Year and $15-million earner who stands for six figures at Three Chimneys, Hip 681 is a rangy dark bay colt who’s a half-brother to the brilliantly fast Mundaye Call. That filly, a $950,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga purchase by OXO Equine, shattered the seven-furlong track record at Ellis Park when stopping the clock in 1:21 flat in capturing the Audubon Oaks. The dam, Reve d’Amour, is also responsible for Cascais, a sharp 2-year-old winner last fall for Three Chimneys, and Chad Brown who’s on the comeback track at Belmont Park.

Second dam Smolensk also brings a ton of class and some turf influence, to the pedigree page. By an all-time great broodmare sire Danzig, she was a multiple group winner in France and Group 1 placed in England before producing eight winners, including graded stakes winner and Grade I-placed Can the Man.

It doesn’t fit on the standard pedigree page because of Smolensk’s success, but Hip 681’s third dam is the great Blush With Pride, who won four graded stakes, including the 1982 Grade I Kentucky Oaks. In addition to Smolensk, she produced four other stakes horses, including graded stakes winner Better Than Honour, named 2007 Broodmare of the Year after remarkably producing back-to-back Belmont Stakes winners in Jazil and Rags to Riches. Thanks to that incredible achievement, Better Than Honour then sold for a jaw-dropping $14 million at Fasig-Tipton November in 2008.

Hip 681 is a gorgeous dark bay with a powerful shoulder and neck, with plenty of development still to come as a late-April foal. From a pedigree stacked with class and one of the top sires in the world behind him, he’s got all the tools to be a Classic contender.

Syndication price includes all veterinary, training, acquisition, and legal costs through January 1, 2025.
