Master the Day

    • Romans’ favorite colt of the Keeneland Sale session

    • By exciting young, undefeated son of Candy Ride

    • Open company quality colt eligible for series of lucrative New York-bred races

Mastery was an undefeated Grade 1 winner for trainer Bob Baffert, who took a liking to this colt at the Keeneland September sale this week. But so too did Dale Romans, and there is some jovial history there. You see, Baffert and Romans both train for Dennis Albaugh. Romans asked Baffert to “stay off” this colt so that Dale could combine forces (Albaugh and WPT) to buy him, and Baffert relented.

The dark bay colt is a real looker, and a New York-bred on top of that, an angle that Dale knows very well dating back to his first Kentucky Derby runner. That was Sharp Humor, who was a champion New York-bred 2-year-old for Dale and rose from there to win a Grade 2 at three and finish second to Barbaro in the Grade 1 Florida Derby.

Baffert trained this colt’s half brother, Super Ninety Nine, who won the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes and finished third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on the Triple Crown trail a few years back.

Mastery was the Derby favorite during the winter of 2017, bridging his 2- and 3-year-old seasons with dominant wins in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity and Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, which turned out to be his final start. He won his four career races by a combined 19 1/2 lengths. Mastery now stands in Kentucky at the fabled Claiborne Farm and this colt is from his first crop of yearlings.

The colt is bred on the same cross as grade 1 winners Gift Box and Leofric.

Price includes all acquisition costs and all training, veterinary, and insurance expenses until January 1, 2022.
