We struck for one more superstar colt before the dark day break at Keeneland September, rounding out a stellar class of yearlings with Hip 879, an outstanding son of star young sire Not This Time.
One of the last great sons of Giant’s Causeway out of blue hen mare Miss Macy Sue, Not This Time was a hot commodity entering his stud career and has exceeded even those lofty expectations. Represented by 27 stakes winners in just four crops to race thus far, he has exploded in popularity particularly in the last two years, with good reason. His son Epicenter was the runaway champion 3-year-old in 2022 and his Up to the Mark is the leading turf horse in America this year.
This colt’s dam, Foreign Affair, has a 2-year-old winner by Justify from her only foal to race thus far, and she’s a half-sister to the terrific Scat Daddy mare So Perfect, who won or placed in eight Group races across England, Ireland and France. This is also the female family of multiple graded stakes winner Cowtown Cat.
A big, forward dark bay reminiscent of his sire, Hip 879 has a powerful and easy walk with a big overstep. A tremendous physical presence, he’s built like an older horse and has a lovely, versatile pedigree that suggests he’ll have no problem going Classic distances at a high level.
