World record holder Twilight Eclipse looks earn a trip to California for the $3,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) via the $600,000 Joe Hirsch Invitational (G1) at Belmont Park on Saturday.
The 4-year-old Purim gelding is flourishing since shipping back to Belmont Park. He’s coming off a very good runner up effort to Big Blue Kitten in the August 18 Sword Dancer (G1) at Saratoga and trainer Tom Albertrani is looking forward to a rematch between the two.

With virtually no rain in the forecast, Twilight Eclipse is destined to run over his preferred surface on Saturday — firm turf.
In the March 23 Pan American (G2) at Gulfstream, Twilight Eclipse ‘eclipsed’ the world record set for 1 1/2 miles on ANY surface, covering the distance in 2:22.63 under Javier Castellano, who has the return engagement at the same distance on Saturday.
“This is one of the best, if not the best, older horse turf race we’ve seen all year,” said WPT president Terry Finley. “The field is loaded with quality from top to bottom. Our horse has been second in two straight grade ones, and we’re confident he’s on top of his game going into the Hirsch. After he set the world record in the Pan American earlier this year, we mapped out a plan to get him to the Breeders’ Cup the first Saturday in November.”
Post time for the Joe Hirsch is 5:17 ET. Twilight Eclipse breaks from post 6 in the 10 horse field.
