Smokin' John romped to victory on May 5th at Churchill Downs.  The victory was the first of the season for John a five-year-old son of Smoke Glacken.  Ridden by Robby Albarado, the victory pushed Smokin' John's career earnings over $112,000.

Breaking from post eight, Smokin' John got away in good order and settled into third outside the early pacesetters about two lengths behind a pace that went in 24.1. Robby Albarado kept Smokin' John in the clear on the outside in a relaxed third about three lengths back that went in 48 flat. Smokin' John was given a little more reign with about three furlongs to go, and he quickly moved up to challenge on the outside, sticking his head in front heading into the turn. Smokin' John began edging away through the turn seizing a half-length lead after three-quarters that went in 1:12.2. By the top of the stretch John had drawn clear by four and was kept to task by Robby Albarado through the lane to win by four and a half lengths. The final time for the the mile and a sixteenth was 1:44.2.
