Critical Decision won the 50K Maiden Claimer on March 22nd at Aqueduct to earn $15,600. Critical Decision was hustled from the gate to contest the pace. Critical and another horses sprinted well clear through the first quarter mile, and the top tandem managed to slow the pace down and set a moderate pace before Critical Decision ground down the pacesetter and drew off convincingly through the stretch to score an easy victory.

Trainer Rick Violette's assistant Rusty said, "I told Eibar there wasn't much speed in the race on paper so to go ahead and send Critical Decision and see what happens.  A horse will sometimes get new found courage when they're put into the race early.  He got interested early, and when Eibar asked him he went by easily.  If he doesn't want to pass too many horses, then we had to give him less horses to pass.  Eibar did a great job not going too fast and keeping plenty left in the tank.  We took advantage of the lesser competition and proved much the best."

Jockey Eibar Coa said, "I was told to send him and see what happened.  The inside horse was pushed hard to make the lead, and I was able to sit right off him.  He tried to slow it up a little bit, and nobody else had any speed.  We were well clear of the field, and my colt relaxed.  When I asked him he went by willingly, and we got the job done.  He was game."
