Awesome Gem took another impressive step in his development winning the "a other than" allowance on October 26th at Santa Anita in impressive fashion.  Awesome Gem broke well and was taken back early in the race.  Awesome Gem was last in the field of nine after a quarter-mile.  David Flores guided Awesome Gem off the rail down the backstretch to sit in the clear.  Awesome Gem was still eighth after a half-mile, and Flores put Awesome Gem to a drive.  Awesome Gem once again showed an explosive turn of foot as he rallied right into contention heading into the turn.  Awesome Gem was fanned well out into the center of track being forced outside five horses to his inside on the turn.  He continued with a ferocious rally, and hit the lead early in the stretch.  He began looking around again after he made the lead, and Flores hit him with the whip causing Awesome Gem to duck out.  Nevertheless, Awesome Gem was well in command at that point and held sway to the wire.

Craig Dollase said, "This effort was more impressive than you think when you look at a few things.  The horse that ran second to us last race came back to run yesterday and bounced badly as the odds-on favorite.  Our horse comes out here today and runs huge again.  That's a big thing.  Then, you have to look at the way the race unfolded.  We're well back, we're about eight or ten paths out on the turn for home, and he still wins this effortlessly.  David (Flores) had this horse in a drive for nearly a half-mile and he just kept going.  That is very encouraging.  This horse is also so versatile, that we don't have to close any doors.  He can run on the turf or dirt.  He'll go short or long.  He can be close or off the pace.  If he stays sound we should continue to have a lot of fun."

Awesome Gem earned $26,400 for his effort bringing his career total to $$76,100.
