Felonious Monk finally got a clean trip and showed incredible resolve to score a game victory in an "a other than" allowance on January 1st at the Fair Grounds. Breaking from post two, Felonious Monk got away extremely sharply again and tugged himself up to contest the early pace.  Felonious Monk was second a half-length back through a sharp quarter-mile in 22.1. Felonious Monk continued to battle for the lead as a new challenge emerged from the favorite on the outside.  The early pacesetter began to retreat, but the favorite made a sweeping move to stick his head in front of Felonious Monk on the turn and heading into the stretch. Jockey Lonnie Meche remained patient on Felonious Monk and then shook him up when he straightened away in the stretch. Felonious Monk surged past the favorite early in the stretch putting him away and then repelled a bid late from a closer to secure the victory.  The running time for the race was 1:10.3 over a track that was playing slow all day.

Dallas Stewart said, "I could not be happier with this race. This colt is as tough as nails.  Lonnie (Meche) rode with a lot of confidence. He gave the horse his head early, but he didn't panic when the favorite came outside.  You could see he knew the horse was fighting on with plenty in the tank. When he set him down our colt responded gamely. He refused to let those other horses beat him.  He ran hard and still fought the closer off.  It was a great effort."

Felonious Monk earned $24,000 for his effort. We intend to take a hard look at the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Dash on January 27th at Gulfstream Park
