Safety Martial capped off a big weekend for West Point Thoroughbreds with a victory on January 14th at Philadelphia Park.  The win made it three wins out of three races this weekend for West Point Thoroughbreds.  Pass The Punch started things off with a MSW win on January 13th at Aqueduct followed by a huge win by Awesome Gem in the $200,000 San Fernando Handicap(G2) at Santa Anita.

To cap off the weekend, Safety Martial made his 2007 debut a winning one under a savvy ride by Roberto Alvarado Jr. Safety Martial broke awkwardly and had to be taken back and straightened up early.  The early pace was strong, and Safety Martial sat off the pace through the first quarter-mile.  Despite a scrum for the lead up front, a seam remained open among the four horses and Alvarado gave Safety Martial his head.  Safety Martial made a bold move down the backstretch and grabbed the lead heading into the final turn.  Safety Martial was engaged from the inside through the turn and the top of the stretch, but he repelled the challenge in the final furlong and drew off late under steady handling.

Lupe Preciado said, "That was a nice race.  I thought Roberto did a great job.  He said Safety Martial tried to break in badly at the start, so he grabbed hold of him to get him steadied.  Once he got settled, he let him go down the backstretch.  This horse is surprisingly fast when you let him get going, but he only gives it to you in one burst.  He did a nice job letting him make the lead when that hole was there.  It might have been a little early for some horses, but this horse would rather be close and hang on.  He hung on pretty well in the stretch to draw away from that horse on the rail."
