Awesome Gem to run in Strub Stakes(G2)
West Point Thoroughbred's Awesome Gem has drawn post four in the Grade 2, $300,000 Strub Stakes on February 3rd at Santa Anita Park. Tyler Baze will once again be aboard for the trip. Awesome Gem enters the Strub off a stirring win in the San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes(G2) on January 13th.
Trainer Craig Dollase discussed the Strub saying, "This horse has been tremendous in his last four races. We are a little traffic trouble away from being a graded stakes winner on the turf and the dirt. The sky really could be the limit for him. He trains like a horse that wants to run all day, so I think the added distance in the Strub should help him. He likes to have some targets to run at, so I hope there will be an honest pace. However, I think if he runs back to his last race he should be extremely tough."
Terry Finley said, "This horse could be very special. We bought him at the 2005 Barretts sale for $150,000. He had an ankle chip that we had to remove, so we gave him time. The patience has paid off though. Now, we hope to give his partners the ride of their life. We've certainly got our seatbelts on after his last race."
The race drew a field of seven, and we've drawn perfectly in the middle of the gate. Five of our six opponents are exiting the San Fernando. We're only facing one new shooter, and he should ensure us a pretty solid pace to run at. If we're at our best on Saturday, then we will win.
If Awesome Gem runs well in the Strub, plans call for him to run back in the $1,000,000 Santa Anita Handicap(G1) on March 3rd.
