Defrereoftheheart breaks maiden!!!

May 19, 2007 · By · Share

Defrereoftheheart made his return to the starting gate a winning one in a NY Bred MSW at Belmont.  Running into a stiff head wind down the backstretch, Defrereoftheheart skirmished for the lead with a longshot through a first quarter-mile in 23.2.  The longshot pulled up, but the eventual runner-up quickly engaged Defrereoftheheart on the turn.  Defrereoftheheart was actually briefly passed, but jockey Eibar Coa saved plenty in the tank.  When asked for run, Defrereoftheheart responded resolutely on the rail by gaining a slim lead.  Defrereoftheheart remained determined through the lane to hang on and score by a half-length.

Kiaran McLaughlin said, "He got a little tired, but he won.  There's not much more you can ask for.  Seven furlongs can be a tricky distance especially coming off of a layoff.  This horse has a lot of heart.  I thought he ran real well.  Eibar did a real nice job of keeping him relaxed, and he had plenty left when we needed it."

Defereoftheheart is a three-year-old son of Defrere.  He now has a win and two seconds from five career starts.  His earnings now top $45,000
