Flashy Bull wins stirring Schaefer(G3)
Flashy Bull stamped himself as one of the country's top older horses scoring a stirring victory in $100,000 William Donald Schaefer Handicap(G3) at Pimlico.
In a stretch duel reminiscent of the battle between Sunday Silence and Easy Goer in the 1989 Preakness, Flashy Bull outdueled Hesanoldsalt. Flashy Bull broke alertly and cut across the field to settle into the three path. He stalked the early pace sitting second through a solid half-mile in 47.1. Jockey Alan Garcia had Flashy Bull in the clear toward the center of the track heading into the far turn. When given his cue, Flashy Bull surged to the front on the turn as even money favorite Hesanoldsalt engaged Flashy Bull from the outside. As the top pair straightened away in the stretch, Flashy Bull dug in on the inside while Hesanoldsalt loomed menacingly right outside him. The pair engaged in a stirring stretch duel through the length of the lane with neither horse yielding an inch. Flashy Bull remained resolute down on the fence refusing to yield. As the wire hit, Flashy Bull had his head in front to score his first graded stakes victory.
Jockey Alan Garcia said, "What a race. I have to give all the credit to my horse. He gave me everything he had from the quarter-pole to the wire. He did not want to get beat. He really fought for it. This is one of my biggest wins so far. I am very happy."
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said, "I am so happy for this horse. He showed so much determination. I've always thought this horse would be a graded stakes winner, but he really put it all together this year. The time off we gave him last fall really helped him to mature, and he's developed that killer instinct. Hopefully we can keep it going."
Flashy Bull, a four-year-old son of Holy Bull, notched his third win in a row in the Schaefer, and this was West Point Thoroughbreds' second win in the race after capturing the 2004 edition with Seattle Fitz. The Schaefer was Flashy Bull's first graded stakes victory after previously placing in three graded stakes. With the win, Flashy Bull now has four wins, five seconds, and three thirds from seventeen career starts. He has earned $330,450.
