Awesome Gem ready for San Diego Handicap(G2)

July 19, 2007 · By · Share

Awesome Gem, West Point Thoroughbreds' graded stakes winning son of Awesome Again, will return to graded stakes company when he tackles eight foes in the $300,000 San Diego Handicap(G2) on Saturday, July 21st at Del Mar.  Awesome Gem enters the San Diego off of a hand ride allowance victory on June 23rd.  After a freshening this spring, Awesome Gem returned to the races in May running a 101 Beyer before cruising last time out.  A winner of the Grade 2 San Fernando Breeders' Cup, Awesome Gem is also graded stakes placed on the turf.  David Flores, who partnered with Awesome Gem at the start of the gelding's career, has the mount for the San Diego.  First or second in eight of eleven career starts; Awesome Gem has career earnings over $270,000.

West Point Thoroughbreds President Terry Finley said, "Awesome Gem is a very talented individual.  We had to take our time getting him to the races, but he's been worth the wait.  He has an explosive turn of foot when you ask him, and he's put it together mentally start by start.  I am still not sure that we have seen the absolute best he can give.  He's probably as close to a true mile and a quarter horse as you'll see."
