Irish Smoke Wins The G1 Spinaway!!

September 02, 2007 · By · Share

Irish Smoke stamped herself as one of the best two-year-old fillies in the nation this afternoon with her authoritative win in the Spinaway Stakes(G1) at Saratoga.  Sent off as the 6/5 favorite, Irish Smoke sat off of an aggressive pace set by More Happy.  Jockey Julien Leparoux angled Irish Smoke to the outside on the turn and then asked her for run as they passed the quarter pole.  She responded in kind and drew away from the field inside the sixteenth pole.

"My filly was going along comfortably and when I asked her, she gave me an incredible kick.  I knew I was home at the eighth pole," Leparoux said.  Trainer Patrick Biancone added, "As of today, she is one of the best two-year-old fillies in the country."

"It was pretty clear that Julien felt confident in this filly when he started pumping his fist five jumps from the wire," Terry Finley said.  "This filly just does everything so professionally that you forget she's only a two-year-old.  What a great way to close out the Saratoga race meet."

Irish Smoke now boasts two wins in two starts.  The two-year-old daughter of Smoke Glacken has earned $187,200.
