Macho Again breaks maiden in smashing style
A return to the dirt was exactly what the racing gods ordered as Macho Again dominated a maiden special weight field at Churchill Downs. Macho Again broke very alertly then came back to hand for jockey Jamie Theriot. He rated in fourth through a quarter-mile in 23 flat then advanced to third after a half-mile. When Theriot gave Macho Again his cue, Macho Again exploded away and drew off to over a five-length victory while under a hand ride late.
Trainer Dallas Stewart said, "This could be a very nice colt. We are not going to rush him. He's still learning. Jamie Theriot said the horse was still a little green at times. He will just get better as he matures. We could have a lot of fun over the winter with him."
Jockey Jamie Theriot said, "I really like this colt. He broke great, and then he came back to me beautifully. I was able to take hold of him and get him to settle. He was looking around a little bit down the backstretch. When I nudged him at the three-eighths pole he took off. He shied away from my whip in the stretch and was still a little green, but he felt like he would run all day."
We will now point Macho Again for a race early at the Fairgrounds meet in New Orleans. Macho Again, who debuted with a strong runner-up finish at Saratoga, now has a win and a second from three career starts. The two-year-old son of Macho Uno has now earned over $36,000.
