West Point sends pair into Derby preps

January 09, 2008 · By · Share

The weather may still be cold, but Kentucky Derby fever is spreading like wildfire.  West Point Thoroughbreds has a bad case of the fever.  With potentially up to seven Triple Crown nominees, the stable is poised to make another sustained run at the Kentucky Derby.

The first tests come this weekend when Macho Again contests the $100,000 Lecomte Stakes(G3) at the Fair Grounds and El Gato Malo runs in the $150,000 San Rafael Stakes(G3) at Santa Anita.

Macho Again enters the Lecomte off of an impressive allowance race at Churchill Downs in November.  Freshened for this contest, the son of Macho Again has trained exceptionally heading into the race.  The Lecomte will be his first contest around two-turns, and we expect him to appreciate the route of ground.

El Gato Malo, our undefeated son of El Corredor, enters the San Rafael off of a dominating victory in the Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.  Despite atrocious weather in southern California, El Gato Malo's training has been uninterrupted at Hollywood Park.

With both horses positioned to succeed, this looks like it could be a huge weekend for the stable.
