Wincat runs third in Swale(G2)
Wincat ran into a freak but fought on gamely to finish third in the $150,000 Swale Stakes(G2) at Gulfstream Park. Wincat bobbled slightly at the start but broke well and settled into a pace pressing position. The early pace was torrid as the eventual winner went a quarter in 21.4 and a half in 44.1. Wincat continued to loom on the outside, but the pacesetter sprung away at the head of the stretch. Wincat could not go with him as the early pace took its toll. Wincat ended up on the short end of the second place photo beaten just over three-lengths in total.
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said, "We ran into a freak today. There's no shame in running third. The winner had five starts and graded stakes experience. He's a very nice horse. It's a huge jump to go from one maiden race to graded stakes company especially as a three-year-old. Wincat ran really well. I think you can see that we will have a lot of fun with him."
Jockey John Velazquez said, "This is a very nice horse. He ran his heart out today. He broke well and has a high cruising speed. We just got beat by a horse that freaked today. My horse was going so comfortably that I let him go on with his speed. It's hard to chase like that. He got tired in the last furlong but he never quit trying. He kept fighting even though the horse that we lost the photo too was much fresher. I liked my horse a lot."
Wincat earned $15,000 for his effort in the Swale and pushed his career earnings to $44,400.
