Saratoga Russell enters Derby picture off romp
Not even a driving rainstorm could extinguish the white-hot flame of a supernova named Saratoga Russell. Facing a sloppy track and five opponents, Saratoga Russell went to the front and improved his position from there in a Florida-bred "a other than" allowance at Gulfstream Park. By the time Russell reached the wire his margin of victory was a mind-boggling ten and three-quarter lengths. A runaway winner at Aqueduct in his last start, the victory clearly affirms the immense talent that Saratoga Russell has and places him squarely on the Kentucky Derby trail.
Jockey Eibar Coa said, "This horse is not a sprinter. It took him a quarter-mile to really sit down. When he did the race was over. This horse moves beautifully. He could have gone further. He's a really nice colt."
Trainer Rick Violette said, "I think it's safe to say that this horse can run a little bit. Eibar could not have been happier with him. We had a couple hiccups on the road to this race, but he showed how talented he was. Not even Mother Nature could disrupt him. We are on the Kentucky Derby trail."
The result was nothing short of authoritative, and we are clearly on the Kentucky Derby trail. A three-year-old son of Trippi, Saratoga Russell now has two wins and a second from three career starts. His career earnings now stand at $66,800.
