Awesome Gem runs third in San Antonio(G2)
Making his first start since the $5,000,000 Breeders' Cup Classic(G1) in October, Awesome Gem tried to run down lone speed in the $250,000 San Antonio Handicap(G2) at Santa Anita. Awesome Gem gave a valiant effort and ran a game third beaten less than two-lengths. Awesome Gem was pinched slightly at the start but got a good ground saving trip. The eventual winner got away to a relatively easy lead, but Awesome Gem made a strong move heading into the turn for home. However, he had too many obstacles to overcome finishing a strong third.
Trainer Craig Dollase said, "I thought that was a perfect tightener. We were facing a horse that has been running a lot, and he's been running very well. Awesome Gem made his normal move, but the winner got away with a pretty easy pace. We likely needed the race, so this sets us up perfectly for the future."
Jockey David Flores said, "My horse ran great. I am very happy with his race. The winner was hard to catch the way things set up, but my horse got a lot from the race."
We will likely look to run Awesome Gem back the $1,000,000 Santa Anita Handicap(G1) on March 1st. A five-year-old son of Awesome Again, Awesome Gem has now earned $1,161,360 from 16 career starts.
