WPT Headlines Two Graded Stakes at Santa Anita
Saturday could be another historic day for West Point Thoroughbreds as our talented duo of Awesome Gem and El Gato Malo will contest graded stakes at Santa Anita.
Awesome Gem, our five-year-old son of Awesome Again, has been made the morning-line favorite in the $1,000,000 Santa Anita Handicap. Awesome Gem drew post five of fourteen with regular rider David Flores back aboard. Awesome Gem enters the "Big Cap" off a solid third place finish in the San Antonio Handicap.
Trainer Craig Dollase said, "We got the race we wanted into him in the San Antonio. We're setup exactly how we planned for this race."
Early Kentucky Derby favorite, the undefeated El Gato Malo, drew the rail in the $200,000 Sham Stakes(G3) on the Santa Anita Handicap undercard. El Gato Malo scored a dominating victory in January's San Rafael Stakes(G3) in his last start.
Dollase, who also conditions El Gato Malo, said, "I blew him out an easy three-furlongs this morning. He's been doing so well that I wanted to take a little bit of the edge off him. If David (Flores) gets him into a good position early we should be in position to take another step toward the first Saturday in May."
