El Gato Malo Looks to Punch Derby Ticket

April 02, 2008 · By · Share

In less than two-minutes on Saturday, El Gato Malo could punch his ticket to the Kentucky Derby(G1).  A trip to Louisville will be ensured by virtue of a strong performance in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby(G1) this weekend.  Seeking to avenge his only career defeat, El Gato Malo will be one of the favorites in the Santa Anita Derby.  He will break from post eight of eleven with David Flores in the irons.

Trainer Craig Dollase could not be more pleased with how El Gato Malo enters the race.  He said, "He's done nothing short of tearing down the barn since the last race.  He was angry after he lost.  He has trained great, and I really think he should move forward off that last race.  He got a world of experience.  He finished brilliantly once he got free and almost ran down Colonel John.  That's a very nice colt, so I look forward to trying to turn the tables on him this weekend."

The Santa Anita Derby is scheduled for 5:30 EDT/2:30 PDT and will be telecast live on NBC.
